Comparison of modules Ubiquiti XR5 and Senao Engenius EMP-8603


Ubiquiti XR5 miniPCI module is running in the 5GHz band, 802.11a compliant.
Card due to the high stability and high quality connections is very popular among successful wireless Internet providers. Card has a significant effect of up to 28dBm, which makes it the most is used for efficient and reliable point to point bridges. Engenius Senao's response to the XR5 is the EMP-8603 module, which in the 5GHz band is characterized by lower power 1dBm.

Short characteristics of the modules


XR5 is designed only to work in the 5GHz band. Less flexibility of this solution is compensated by a higher durability cards (cards are much less jednopasmowe emergency). In addition, card is protected against overvoltage to 16kV. Behind XR5 is a powerful radiator, through which the card is not overheating constantly working at full power. EMP-8603, unlike its competitor operates in the 2.4 GHz (802.11b / g) and 5GHz (802.11a). Worth emphasizing is the fact that each band has its own separate circuit radio. With such treatment card should be as little as fallback jednopasmowe modules. Card is protected against overvoltage to 16kV. Behind the EMP-8603 includes two radiators. For the 2.4 GHz band and 5GHz MMCX connectors derived separately. During the tests, the antenna separated distance of about 3km and between them there are no obstacles. EnGenius Senao card is prone to overclocking. The measurements were taken under the default values in the case of the EMP-8603 also at the power set to 30dBm. Charter also compared with the module Wistron CM9.

Sets of work in the following configurations:

  • A Proxim Omnidirectional antenna 10dBi 5GHz Tsunami has been installed on the eighth floor (about 25m). The antenna is connected to the tested modules are installed on board RouterBOARD RB433.
  • Set B consisted of a client with 23dBi panel antenna Mars, Wistron CM9 cards and RouterBOARD RB433 boards.

Measurement of the signal was measured at frequencies in the 5300MHz and 5500MHz - 5700MHz. The measurement results were read on MikroTik RB433 client-side.

During the tests, all the cards worked very stable. Senao EnGenius module does not require an external power connection when both worked with the power of default and overclocked to 30dBm. The average results agree with the technical specification. EMP-8603 overclocked obtained better results than the Ubiquiti card.
